Accepting Your First-Year Student Merit Scholarship

UMBC Merit Scholarships are only offered to incoming first-year students and transfer students.  Incoming first-year students must accept their offer by accepting the terms and conditions of their agreement no later than May 1st.

Please note:  If you have trouble accessing the agreement, please try viewing the form in a different browser.  “Refreshing” your window will invalidate the agreement page and may cause an error.

STEP 1:  If you have not already done so, please Upgrade your myUMBC Account. Please allow up to 24 hours after upgrading your account before proceeding to Step 2.

STEP 2:  Log in to your myUMBC account and access your Alerts.

STEP 3:  Under your Alerts, please view your Financial Aid and Scholarships To Dos.  Click on the link provided in the “Merit Scholarship Agreement” To Do.

STEP 4: Review the award offer, details, and terms and conditions.

STEP 5:  Indicate your response by selecting “accept” or “decline.” Sign/date the agreement.

STEP 6:  Before selecting “Submit” to send this form to our office, please print a copy for your reference.

STEP 7:  Once successfully submitted, a confirmation page will be displayed. Within 2 business days your award will automatically show as accepted in your aid package!

Please allow 2 business days for the “To-Do” alert to be removed from your account and for the scholarship to be listed as accepted in your financial aid package (you will not manually accept your scholarship through your aid package, this will be processed by our system in 2 business days once you have signed your agreement!).

Looking to defer a semester?

If you aren’t able to attend UMBC for the semester you were admitted, you must defer your admission with the Admissions office and request to defer your scholarship with our Scholarships Unit.

STEP 1: Sign and accept your scholarship agreement via the steps above.

STEP 2: Contact Admissions to defer your admission.

STEP 3: Submit your Deferral Request to the Scholarships Unit. A decision regarding your request will be sent to you within 2 weeks of submission.

Please note that if you fail to complete all three of these steps, your scholarship will not be available to you upon your return.

Newly Admitted Students: Incorrect Out of State Residency Assignment

Often, if a section of your admissions application was incomplete, you will be assigned automatic out of state residency. If this is the case, you can update your residency here, or you can contact admissions for further instructions.

Once your residency with the school has been updated from out of state to in-state, your scholarship eligibility will be re-evaluated based on in-state status and requirements. This will occur automatically, within 2 weeks of your residency being updated with the university. You will receive an email to your myUMBC account regarding your re-evaluated scholarship status once reviewed.

  • Please keep in mind that in-state awarding is different from out of state awarding, and the re-evaluation of your scholarship status will result in either the reduction or cancelation of the scholarship based on your eligibility in the new residency pool.
